Assemblyman Avi Schnall on Tuesday was officially sworn into his second term as a member of the 222nd New Jersey Legislature. Following his reelection win in November, Schnall’s influence in the State House has expanded significantly with his appointment to several powerful leadership and committee positions.
Speaker Craig Coughlin announced that Schnall will serve as the Chairman of the Assembly Oversight, Reform and Federal Relations Committee. In addition to this chairmanship, Schnall has been named a member of the Budget Committee and the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee, and he has been tapped to serve as a Deputy Whip for the Assembly Democratic Majority.
To provide context on the Assemblyman’s new responsibilities, here is a breakdown of what these leadership and committee positions entail:
-
Oversight, Reform & Federal Relations Committee (Chairman): This committee acts as a “watchdog” for state government. It is responsible for reviewing the efficiency of the executive branch, and identifying ways to reduce “red tape” and bureaucracy. As Chairman, Schnall will set the agenda for these critical reforms.
-
Budget Committee: Widely considered one of the most influential panels in Trenton, the Budget Committee is responsible for reviewing the Governor’s annual spending plan. It crafts the state’s annual fiscal law, deciding how billions of dollars in taxpayer funds are allocated to schools, infrastructure, and social programs.
-
Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee: This panel oversees the regulations governing New Jersey’s banking, finance, and insurance sectors. This includes legislation affecting auto and health insurance, trusts, estates, and the legal frameworks that protect consumers in financial transactions.
-
Deputy Whip: The “Whip” system is a leadership structure used to maintain party discipline. As Deputy Whip, Schnall will serve as a key bridge between the Democratic leadership and rank-and-file members. His role involves ensuring members are present for important votes and helping to coordinate the party’s stance on major legislative initiatives.
