Assemblyman Avi Schnall has won the endorsement of the Monmouth County Democratic Convention, a symbolic victory for the freshman legislator as he prepares for his re-election bid in New Jersey’s 30th Legislative District. The convention, held today in Long Branch, saw Schnall garner strong support from party delegates.
However, the endorsement comes at a time when county conventions carry diminished influence following the recent elimination of ballot lines, a change that has reshaped the dynamics of party support in the Garden State.
In 2024, a federal court ruling abolished the state’s long-standing practice of awarding “ballot lines”—preferential ballot placement granted to candidates endorsed by county parties. For decades, the “county line” system gave endorsed candidates a significant edge, often determining primary outcomes before a single vote was cast. Its elimination, hailed by reformers as a democratizing move, has stripped county conventions of much of their former clout.
Schnall, who made headlines in 2023 by flipping a traditionally Republican Assembly seat with overwhelming support from Lakewood’s Orthodox Jewish community, was a focal point at the convention. Delegates praised his advocacy on issues like education funding and infrastructure, which resonate deeply in his district. The vote, conducted among county committee members, municipal chairs, and elected officials, saw Schnall secure a decisive majority, though exact figures were not immediately released by the Monmouth County Democratic Committee.
