In a state where Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris carried the vote by a slim margin of 5.8%—the closest New Jersey has seen since 1992—Lakewood once again cemented its reputation as the strongest Republican stronghold, with President-elect Donald Trump receiving a staggering 87.7% of the town’s vote.
Trump’s dominance in Lakewood was unmatched across New Jersey, even as Harris carried the state overall with 2,209,872 votes to Trump’s 1,961,706.
In 2020, Trump received 82% of the Lakewood vote, winning the town’s vote by 65 points over Joe Biden, who easily won the overall vote in the Garden State.
Lakewood’s overwhelming support for Trump reflects trends observed in previous elections, where the township has consistently leaned heavily Republican. The community’s strong conservative values, coupled with its dense Orthodox Jewish population, have played a significant role in shaping its political landscape. Trump’s policies and rhetoric on religious freedom, Israel, and other issues of importance to the Orthodox community likely contributed to his continued popularity in the town.
While Lakewood painted an overwhelmingly red picture, Vice President Kamala Harris found her strongest support in Lawnside (90.8%) in Camden County and East Orange (90.2%).
Statewide, the 2024 election reflected a tightening of margins, with Harris’s 5.8% lead over Trump marking the narrowest Democratic victory in New Jersey in over three decades. Some suggest this shift signals a more competitive political environment in a state long considered a Democratic stronghold.
When the foolish people of Lakewood and its environs vote the correct way for president but they continue to vote the wrong way for other candidates, it only says that they are foolish. You can’t accomplish anything in government when you vote for the Democrats unless you just want more handouts.
