Police have taken an Ocean County man into custody in connection with a series of bank robberies that occurred in Toms River earlier this week.
Identified as 68-year-old Daniel J. McCarthy, the alleged perpetrator was arrested on Wednesday at an East Brunswick motel.
Shortly after 2 PM on Tuesday, Toms River police received a distress call from the First Financial Bank located on Route 9. The preliminary investigation indicated that a middle-aged white male, donning a dark hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, dark pants, and a surgical mask, handed a note to a bank teller demanding money. However, the suspect got no money from the bank.
As they investigated the First Financial robbery another distress call was relayed, this time from the nearby Santander Bank situated just north of First Financial on Route 9. The report outlined a robbery in progress. Similar to the earlier description, the perpetrator again utilized a note, which he handed to the bank teller. This time, he managed to escape with an undisclosed sum of money.
Eventually, detectives traced a lead pointing to a minivan suspected to have been used during the robberies, and eventually located it along with McCarthy at an East Brunswick motel.
McCarthy, who holds prior addresses in Jackson and East Brunswick, is now facing multiple charges – one count of second-degree robbery and an additional count of second-degree attempted robbery.
