2 Killed In News Helicopter Crash In New Jersey [VIDEO REPORT]

A news helicopter from 6ABC in Philadelphia crashed deep within Wharton State Forest in Southern New Jersey, killing 2 – the pilot and a photographer within the heavily wooded confines of Burlington County.

According to 6ABC, the pilot and photographer were returning from an assignment at the Jersey Shore on Tuesday night when the crash occurred. The victims were identified on Wednesday afternoon as pilot Monroe Smith, 67, and photographer Christopher Doughterty, 45.

The helicopter went down shortly after 8 p.m. in the area of Quaker Bridge Atsion Road and Mullica River Road, within the rugged terrain of Wharton State Forest in Washington Township. The ill-fated aircraft was identified as a 2013 American Eurocopter AS-350A-STAR, leased by 6abc from U.S. Helicopters Inc., based in North Carolina.

“They have a long history with our station. They’ve been working as part of the Action News team for years,” said 6ABC reporter Katherine Scott.

The helicopter wreckage was found by New Jersey State Police, and the Federal Aviation Administration is set to commence its investigation into the tragic incident.
